Mathematics and Statistics Support in the Age of “Big Data”

The sigma Network and the University of Essex invite you to a FREE event to explore how HE maths support provision can respond to the demands of “big data”. Increasingly it is not just STEM students who need mathematical skills – the quantification of the humanities and social sciences requires students in those areas also to be able to deal confidently with data and statistics.
The event will be introduced by two speakers with considerable experience in this field. Participants will then share their own experiences of how they are supporting students in their quantitative skills. All participants should go away with new insights, ideas and action plans for enhancing their own maths and statistics support provision.
Outline of the day:
12.00 – 12.30 Arrive and light lunch
12.30 – 1.00 “BIg Data – what is it, and what demands does it place on today’s undergraduates?” (Richard Skeggs, ESRC Business and Local Government Data Research Centre)
1.00 – 1.30 “Q-Step – early lessons and moving forward” (Simon Gallacher, Nuffield Foundation)
1.30 – 2.00 Coffee break, discussion, identification of delegates’ key issues
2.00 – 3.00 Short presentations by delegates outlining what they are doing to support students with relevant maths, statistics and data analysis skills (eg focused workshops, recommended resources, embedded provision, etc)
3.00 – 3.45 Small group discussion: reflecting on what has been said, what can we take away, what further questions and needs do we have? Action planning for service enhancement..
3.45 – 4.00 Summary. How can the sigma Network support you as practitioners? (David Bowers and Alun Owen, sigma Network)
