CETL-MSOR Conference 2023 – Registration Open

CETL-MSOR Conference 2023

The CETL-MSOR Conference 2023 will take place at Abacws, Cardiff University, 7-8 September 2023. The event is aimed at practitioners from the full range of the learning, teaching and support communities within the disciplines of Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research, and includes those working in related disciplines, mathematical education, and staff developers.

Keynote Speakers

We are delighted to confirm our keynote speakers:

  • Dr Mark McCartney, Ulster University
Necessary and Sufficient? Broadening the curriculum with the history of mathematics.

The history of mathematics can add breadth to the curriculum and can be placed within teaching in a variety of ways, from occasional asides in lectures to a whole module in the final year. Like any academic discipline, history is also often more complex, rich, and wide-ranging than it first appears. Many more people, places, and periods were involved in teaching, learning, and researching mathematics than make it into the mathematical headlines. This talk will ‘fly the flag’ for the history of mathematics;  give pointers to some resources; look at ways history can be used in the curriculum; and if time permits sketch a case study illustrating why seemingly simple historical questions do not always have simple answers.

  • Dr Emma Cliffe, University of Bath

From accessibility to universal and inclusive design: Our past, present and future

It has been 22 years since the first publication on the accessibility of maths and statistics in MSOR Connections, and 15 years since the inaugural meeting of the Access MSOR working group. By 2008, accessibility had emerged as a major theme at CETL MSOR, and it is a theme that has remained with us. This talk will give an overview of what we have achieved as a community during this time. We will reflect on the experience of disabled students accessing mathematical teaching 20 years ago and compare this to the experiences of students today. Recognising the advances in technology and the broader context, we will emphasize the efforts required by us to ensure accessibility advanced in our teaching, learning, and support environments. After highlighting what we can achieve at present, given the necessary resources, to enable access for a modern disabled student we will ask what challenges remain. By situating this question within the concepts of universal and inclusive design we will consider future directions for exploration of practice in our mathematical teaching, learning, and support contexts. Hence, we will conclude by asking, as a community, what’s next?

  • Dr Joe Kyle, University of Birmingham
